Most local businesses I talk to are leaving money on the table with local search, and they usually don’t know it. The website isn’t mobile friendly, the Google Business Profile hasn’t been touched since it was claimed, the listings across the web have three different phone numbers on them. None of it feels urgent until you see the numbers behind how people actually find and choose local businesses.
That’s what this article is for. Below you’ll find the stats on how many consumers search for businesses online, how often those searches turn into phone calls and visits, and how quickly it all happens.

It comes as no surprise that millions of consumers are searching for local services on Google every day.
What can be a bit of a surprise is the sheer volume of those searches, and how much local SEO actually moves the needle for small businesses. In this article, I’m going to run through 18 local SEO stats that make the case for why Google visibility is a survival issue for local businesses, not a nice-to-have.
How many Google searches are happening each day?
Google confirmed in 2025 that it handles over 5 trillion searches per year, which works out to roughly 14 billion searches a day. Whatever you’ve heard about people switching to ChatGPT or TikTok for search, the raw volume on Google is still enormous.
What percentage of Google searches are local?
The most commonly cited figure is 46%, which comes from a Google presenter at a 2018 conference. Google hasn’t published an updated number since, but nothing in the more recent behavioral data suggests it’s dropped. If anything, mobile has pushed it higher. These are high-intent searches too. Someone googling “dermatologist near me” is alot closer to booking than someone scrolling Instagram. BrightLocal
How many “near me” searches are people doing?
There are an estimated 1.5 billion “near me” searches every month, which comes out to about 50 million per day. Google’s own data has shown that searches for “near me today” or “near me tonight” grew over 900% in a two-year span. People aren’t planning ahead. They’re looking for a business they can use right now. Marketing LTB
What percentage of consumers will disregard a business they can’t find online?
62% of consumers will disregard a business they cannot find online. Having a findable online presence is table stakes at this point. If your buisness doesn’t show up when someone searches, most of them won’t dig any further, they’ll just call whoever did show up.
Which mapping platform do most consumers use?
88% of consumers use Google Maps, compared to about 12% for Apple Maps. This is why I tell people to prioritize their Google Business Profile over just about everything else in local. If your listing is wrong or unclaimed, you’re invisible to the overwhelming majority of local searchers.
What percentage of people click on the Google Map Pack?
42% of users click on a result in the Map Pack during a local search. And the gap between being in the 3-pack and being just below it is brutal: businesses in the 3-pack get 126% more traffic and 93% more actions (calls, website clicks, direction requests) than businesses ranked 4 through 10. Position 4 might as well be position 40. Digital Silk
Are people using ChatGPT to find local businesses?
Yes, and faster then most business owners realize. 45% of consumers now say they use ChatGPT or other generative AI tools for local business recommendations, per BrightLocal’s most recent consumer survey. Meanwhile Semrush found AI Overviews appearing on somewhere between 16% and 25% of keywords depending on the month. Traditional local SEO still drives the bulk of leads, but AI visibility is no longer optional to think about. Salesgenie
How many consumers read online reviews?
71% of consumers read online reviews regularly while researching local businesses, with 29% saying they always do. That’s actually down a few points from the prior year, which some in the industry read as consumers simply shopping around less, not caring less about reviews. Starfish Reviews
Where do people go to read reviews?
Google dominates at 83%. After that it’s local news sites (48%), Yelp (44%), Facebook (40%), YouTube (34%), and TikTok (20%). Consumers also increasingly cross-reference at least two review platforms before visiting a business, so a great Google rating with a bad Yelp page is still a problem. Jasmine Directory
Do consumers care whether a business responds to reviews?
They do. 86% of consumers say they’re willing to forgive a negative review if the business responds to it thoughtfully. The response matters more than the review itself in a lot of cases. A calm, specific reply to an angry review reads as credibility to everyone else who sees it later. Digital Silk
How recent do reviews need to be?
73% of consumers only trust reviews written within the last month. This is the stat that should change how you operate. A big pile of five-star reviews form 2023 doesn’t carry the weight you think it does. You need a steady drip of new ones, which means asking for reviews has to be baked into your process, not a once-a-year push. Surf Sigma
What star rating do consumers expect?
The sweet spot for trust is 4.2 to 4.5 stars. Interestingly, a perfect 5.0 can actually raise suspicion of fake reviews. Below 4 stars you start losing a meaningful chunk of consumers before they ever click through to your site. Surf Sigma
How many consumers would avoid a business over incorrect information?
62% of consumers would avoid a business if they found incorrect information about it online. An outdated phone number or wrong hours costs you real customers. BrightLocal found that 7% of consumers will abandon their search entirely if the address they find is wrong. Mailmodo
How fast do local searchers act?
Fast. 88% of consumers who do a local search on their smartphone visit or call a business within 24 hours. Among “near me” searchers specifically, 76% visit a related business within a day. Local search sits at the very bottom of the funnel. These people have already done their research and are deciding who gets their money. Mailmodo
What percentage of local mobile searches lead to a purchase?
78% of local mobile searches result in a purchase, either online or in-store. And 28% of searches for something nearby end in a purchase, which makes local search one of the highest-converting channels in all of marketing. Compare that to display ads or cold social traffic and it isn’t close. Mailmodo
How much more will people pay for a business with a strong reputation?
People are willing to pay 22% more for local products or services when the business has a good online reputation. Reviews don’t just win you the customer, they let you charge more. I’ve watched practices with a 4.8 rating hold premium pricing while a competitor down the street with a 3.9 discounts and still struggles.
How often are people searching for local businesses?
84% of consumers search online for local businesses daily. Daily. Local search isn’t an occasional behavior anymore, its just how people navigate their own town. Salesgenie
How many local businesses are actually set up to be found?
This one surprised me. While 89% of small businesses say they invest in organic SEO, only 40% report having a dedicated business website, and just 35% have a Google Business Profile. Read that again. Two thirds of your local competitors haven’t claimed the single most important local ranking asset there is. In most markets, the bar for winning local search is embarrassingly low. The businesses that take it seriously are competing against people who never showed up. BrightLocal
